as illustrated in Fig. 12.4, process modeling can be used on data from event logs,
which are typical for the kind of “continuous” data one gets from web servers and
web applications. If the process mining algorithm is provided as service, then the
even analysis can occur concurrently with changes in the event logs.
Process mining algorithms allow to analyze both structural aspects of a process—
How are events/activities related to each? Who is interacts in realizing a process?—
as well as performance aspects, for instance, related to the analysis of durations (see
Van der Aalst & Weijters, 2005 for an overview). The output of a structural analysis
can, for instance, be a dependency graph, depicting the structure of a (collaborative)
process, such as shown in Fig. 12.3 for the case of decision-making processes as
reflected in chat log files. Process mining can serve a number of purposes, among
