Paillard, D. (2001) Glacial cycles: toward a new paradigm, Reviews of Geophysics ,
39(3): 325-346. This review article explains extremely well the orbital
forcing theory and the need to understand feedback mechanisms in the
Earth's climate system.
Walker, M. and Bell, W. (2005) Late Quaternary Environmental Change: Physical
and Human Perspectives , Harlow: Pearson Education. Clearly written topic
focusing on the last 20,000 years during which time ice sheets have
retreated.
On contemporary climate change the following are useful:
Houghton, J. (2009) Global Warming: The Complete Briefing, , fourth edition,
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. A very readable account of global
warming which includes the latest IPCC figures and predictions.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007) Climate Change 2007.
This is the IPCC report itself which comes in several volumes including
summaries. These reports can be downloaded at www.ipcc.ch.
Stern, N. (2007) The Economics of Climate Change , Cambridge: Cambridge Uni-
versity Press. This is a thought provoking summary of the predictions for
climate change over the coming decades and the potential impacts, demon-
strating an economic case for urgent co-ordinated action.
