Ground sloth
This large, primitive mammal,
Glossotherium harlani , is related to the
modern South American tree sloth, but its
flat grinding teeth suggest that it fed on
grass. At 1.8 m (6 ft) tall these animals had
dermal ossicles embedded into the skin of
their necks and backs as a protection
against predators, similar to the ankylosaur
dinosaurs ( 297, 298 ).
