Mammals
The only articulated mammals usually
found at Green River are the bats ( 207 )
and these are very rare. However, in
2003 a complete skeleton of the small
horse, Hyracotherium ( 208, 209 ), was
discovered by Jim Tynsky (see Appendix:
Site visits). A diverse mammal fauna is
known from teeth and disarticulated
bones, including squirrel-like rodents,
(now confined to tropical oceans),
galliforms (grouse and pheasants),
anseriforms (waterfowl), coraciiforms
(small perching birds such as kingfishers
and rollers), and gruiforms (cranes
and rails). The long-legged, shoreline
waterfowl, Presbyornis , is one of the most
common and probably made most of the
bird trackways at the edge of the lake (see
Trace fossils below).
