Pachycephalosaurs
This group contains the 'thick-headed
lizards', which are characterized by their
curiously domed and massively reinforced
skulls ( 179, 180 ). The males possibly
fought head-butting contests with the
lucky winner ruling herds of females, as is
seen in deer stags and goats today. Several
long, with an armored head, while the necks,
shoulders, and backs were covered in tough
skin in which was set bony plates and spikes,
rather like the scutes of crocodiles ( 178 ).
The tail was armed with a huge bony club on
its end to ward off predators. Both
Ankylosaurus
and
Edmontonia
have been
recorded from the Hell Creek.
