In-Depth Information
Camarasaurus
Described by Cope, this is the most
common herbivorous sauropod and is
nicknamed the 'Jurassic cow' ( 156 - 159 ).
It is related to Brachiosaurus (see p. 166),
and both had a more upright (giraffe-
like) posture than the two previous
genera. It was about 18 m (60 ft) long,
but had a massive skeleton and
weighed up to 18 tons. The skull was
much larger
supporting 52 cone-shaped teeth for
tearing vegetation ( 157 ).
Stegosaurus
This is an unusual ornithischian dinosaur
with large dorsal plates running in two rows
down the length of the body; their function
is still not certain, but they may have been
used as a temperature regulating device as
they consist of only a thin layer of bone and
so could not have been used in defence.
