Government Canyon State
Natural Area: Savannah Loop
The Savannah Loop in the frontcountry of Government Canyon State Natural Area is one of the tamer
trails in this state natural area. This is a good hike for families. The trail parallels Government Canyon
Creek for the first third, and then goes through meadows and woods. A mix of single- and doubletrack
sections adds interest to the hike.
Distance: 2.3-mile lollipop loop
Approximate hiking time: 1.2 hours
Difficulty: Easy due to mostly even terrain
Trail surface: Dirt path; a few rocky areas
Best seasons: Sept through June
Other trail users: Mountain bikers, dog walkers, trail runners
Canine compatibility: Leashed dogs permitted but are restricted to the frontcountry trails
Land status: State natural area; Texas Parks & Wildlife Department
Fees and permits: Fee required, or use the State Parks Pass. A trail permit is required.
Schedule: Open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday through Monday (closed Tuesday through
Thursday). Access to backcountry trails closes at 4:00 p.m.; access to frontcountry trails
closes at 5:00 p.m. Protected Habitat Area trails close March 1 to Sept. 1. Laurel
Canyon Trail is closed.
