FTIR Spectral Data Acquisition and Analysis
FTIR spectra were obtained using a Nicolet spectrometer in conjunction with
an MTech PAS cell. Good-quality spectra were obtained at 4 cm −1 resolution
averaging 128 scans. It is deemed necessary to purge the sample with
helium gas in combination with a drying agent by employing magnesium
perchlorate. This ensured that the system was kept completely dry and free
of atmospheric moisture.
The spectra of synthetic and natural apatites provided a number of spec-
tral details indicating some similarities. Spectra of the apatites are given
in Figures  7.7-7.12 and their peak positions are tabulated in Table  7.2. FTIR
