4 Discussion and Conclusions
The development of the Weddell Sea basin witnessed the interplay of complex
sea
oor spreading and tectonic processes with the deposition of large amounts of
sediments since the Jurassic. As reported from seismic refraction experiments in
front of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf of the southernmost Weddell Sea, 10 km of
sediments overlie a basement of stretched continental crust (H
