Finally, power relations require further development within the MLP, particularly as
they relate to natural resource access and the protection and consumption functions of
agriculture. The sovereignty of market forces is largely unchallenged within the MLP,
leaving unaddressed the social justice issues associated with market-based outcomes. The
role of consumers, particularly in relation to the consumption function of agriculture,
merits particular attention. Access to healthy food, energy, housing and recreation are all
key functions of the agricultural sector, which must be balanced in the pursuit of
sustainability transitions.
