FAMILY-FRIENDLY hotels
A-Haven Townhouse With some
guest rooms large enough to accom-
modate families, this small hotel in
Leith should make any brood feel right
at home. See p.  70.
Barcelo Carlton Hotel Kids will love
the indoor pool. Parents will love the
availability of extra-large units and the
fact that cots are readily provided. It's
right in the heart of town to boot. See
p.  65.
Thrums Hotel This Southside hotel
takes its moniker from Peter Pan
author J. M. Barrie's nickname for his
hometown of Kirriemuir. No sign of
Tinker Bell, but kids are made espe-
cially welcome here, and there is room
for them to play outside. See p.  69.

Inexpensive
Abbey Hotel On the slopes of Calton Hill, this small four-story hotel, once
called the Greenside, gets mixed reviews. On the plus side, it is well located and the
building retains traditional features such as high ceilings, cove moldings, and elabo-
rate trim. The Firth of Forth and the dramatic Forth bridges are just about seen from
the uppermost front rooms; a sloping tiered garden, with a patio at the bottom, is the
view from the rear units.

OLD TOWN
Very Expensive
Barcelo Carlton Hotel This baronial Victorian pile (once an exclusive depart-
ment store) rises from the east side of North Bridge, between the Royal Mile and
the cavernous gap that separates Old Town from New Town. Some recent invest-
ment in the Carlton removed bedrooms to create more space in the remaining units,
and bathrooms that have both a tub and shower. Among the leisure facilities is an
indoor pool. Some complain of the noise from the busy street in front of the hotel:
Light sleepers should request rooms at the rear.
