GAY & LESBIAN
Glasgow and its environs are said to have the largest concentration of gays and les-
bians in the U.K. outside of London. The Merchant City is the only identifiable
district in the city where the gay and lesbian community is particularly concentrated,
dubbed the “gay triangle.”
Bennets Self-described as the city's “premier gay and lesbian night club,” Bennets
is the most consistently popular club in the gay scene. The club extends over two
levels, with chart and full-on dance music. Open Tuesday to Sunday 11:30pm to
3am. 80 Glassford St. &   0141/552-5761. Cover £3-£10. Underground: Buchanan St.
Polo Lounge Gay but hetero-friendly, the Polo is often described as a cross
between an urbane gentleman's club and a Highland country lodge. It is both a bar
and club, with dancing downstairs. Open daily from 5pm to 1am (until 3am Fri-
Sat). 84 Wilson St. &   0141/553-1221. Cover after 10pm £5. Underground: Buchanan St.
Revolver Gay-owned and -operated, the Revolver bar has always tried to be a bit
more grown-up and to dismiss some of the more cheesy and stereotypical elements
of the gay scene. But that doesn't mean that it is not fun or popular. Conversation
generally rules, and the jukebox is free. Drinks are served daily from noon to mid-
night. 6A John St. &   0141/553-2456. Underground: Buchanan St.
Waterloo Bar Attracting a slightly older crowd, this place is the longest-standing
gay bar in town. Away from the heart of the scene in Merchant City, it's located west
