THE CLUB & MUSIC SCENE
Comedy
Jongleurs Comedy Club A corporate-owned entity from England, with more
than a dozen venues across the U.K., Jongleurs came to Scotland a few years back
bringing along its own cadre of house funny men (and women), as well as some
touring comedians from overseas. The acts tend to be mainstream. Renfield St. and
Renfrew St. &   0870/787-0707. Cover £12. Underground: Buchanan St.
The Stand After starting and thriving in Edinburgh, The Stand opened a sec-
ond venue in Glasgow—the city's only purpose-built comedy club. Its presence has
helped to establish an annual International Comedy Festival every spring in the city.
Usually Tuesday night, entitled “Red Raw,” is reserved for amateurs. 333 Woodlands Rd.
&   0870/600-6055. www.thestand.co.uk. Cover £2-£10. Underground: Kelvinbridge.
Dance Clubs
Glasgow has one of the most active dance club scenes in Great Britain. Listed below
are just a few selected venues. In local parlance, “venues” are distinct from the
actual “clubs”—such as Optimo (techno/post-punk) or Pressure (house and
techno)—which are associated with a specific style, DJ, or team of DJs. They can
move around to different venues. It all makes perfect sense to those in the know.
Bamboo This stylish basement club has three distinct rooms, one of which is a
rather posh cocktail lounge. The “Disco Badger” club, playing a mix of house and
R&B, gets good reviews. It's open from 10pm to 3am. 51 West Regent St. &   0141/332-
1067. www.bamb0051.com. Cover £5-£8; free before 10:30pm. Underground: Buchanan St.
The Garage A big student crowd tests the limits of the 1,478-person capacity
here at weekends. In the downstairs area, surrounded by rough stone walls, you get
the impression you're in a castle with a Brit pop and indie soundtrack. Most regulars,
however, gravitate to the huge main dance floor. Open daily 11pm to 3am. 490
Sauchiehall St. &   0141/332-1120. Cover £2-£7. Underground: Buchanan St.
The Sub Club The city's best-known “underground” club is possibly better
than ever, with DJs such as the long-standing kings of house, Harri and Dom of
Subculture, Sunday night's famous Optimo, and occasional live acts such as L.A.'s
No Age. Open daily 10pm to 3am. 22 Jamaica St. &   0141/248-4600. www.subclub.co.uk.
Cover £3-£10. Underground: St. Enoch.
