Stravaigin Café Bar SCOTTISH/INTERNATIONAL “Think global, eat
local” is the motto of Stravaigin, which roughly means “wanderin'” in Scots. While
the basement restaurant here is an award-winning enterprise, the ground-level pub/
cafe offers less expensive but still memorable food. Scottish produce gets interna-
tional twists: For example, cheese and herb fritters with sweet chili sauce or roast
lamb served with coriander couscous. But there are also staples such as hearty beer-
battered fish and fluffy Maris Piper fries. The atmosphere is always cordial, and
prices are lower still during the busy pre-theater seating. If you like Stravaigin, you
might consider its sister bistro near Byres Road, called appropriately enough, Stra-
vaigin 2 (8 Ruthven Lane; &   0141/334-7156 ).

Bella Napoli ITALIAN Set in the heart of the Shawlands district, the main com-
mercial area of Glasgow's Southside, Bella Napoli looks from the street to be a
bright, shiny Italian cafe. But to the rear and down a few steps, a more refined but
still casual dining room is hidden. The family-run business is friendly, and the staff
is efficient as well. Starters include melon with shrimps or minestrone soup, with
the rest of the menu offering a range of pasta dishes as well as risotto and meaty
main courses. Up front, the diner is best for lunch food such as calzones filled with
vegetables, cheese, and tomato sauce.
85 Kilmarnock Rd. &   0141/362-4222. www.crolla.com. Reservations suggested for restaurant. Main
courses £6-£17. MC, V. Daily 9am-11pm (with lunch and dinner hours kept in restaurant). Train: Cross-
myloof. Bus: 38.
Cookie INTERNATIONAL Opened late in 2009, this cool bistro with graffiti
art and a tiny shop for kitchen gadgets offers a menu chalked on the board. Owner
Domenico del Priore likes using fresh, seasonal produce and hopes you will, too—so
far so good as people have been flocking here. Cookie's goal is to connect diners with
cooks, food producers, farmers, and local allotment growers. Del Priore's own family
in Umbria grows the olives that end up in the oil here. Expect dishes such as wild
mushroom risotto, pork loin with savoy cabbage, or house-made vanilla ice cream.
The wine selection is virtually unique and almost all are sold by the glass as well.
72 Nithsdale Rd. &   0141/423-1411. www.cookiescotland.com. Main courses £8.50-£15. MC, V. Tues-Sat
9am-10pm; Sun and Mon 10am-6pm. Train: Queens Park. Bus: 38 or 44.

Art Lover's Café SCOTTISH The House for an Art Lover (p. 200) is a creation
by contemporary builders and architects working with some very basic drawings left
by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In addition to being a stop for hardcore Mackintosh
fans, it's also home to a popular cafe. Next to the gift shop, a stylish, ivory-colored
dining room has arching windows that look out on to a garden. The cafe's modern
