Mother India INDIAN After more than a decade in business, this restaurant
has established itself as the most respected Indian restaurant in Glasgow. The menu
is not overloaded with hundreds of different dishes—just a dozen or so and there's
not a poor option among them. Oven-baked fish, which comes wrapped in foil, is
seasoned with aromatic spices, while chicken and zucchini squash is served with a
sauce that favors pan-roasted cumin and cardamom. Whether seated on the ground
floor or in the dining room above, you will find the staff to be courteous and atten-
tive. Down the road, toward the heart of the West End, a second branch— Mother
India's Café (1355 Argyle St.; &   0141/339-9145 )—offers less expensive,
tapas-style dishes.

Two Fat Ladies FISH/SCOTTISH This ranks high on the list of many locals'
favorite restaurants. The “Two Fat Ladies” is a reference to its street number—a
nickname for the number 88 when called out in bingo games. Dishes might include
red-onion-and-goat-cheese tart, pan-seared bream, or filet of sea bass served on
mashed potatoes with spring onions. In addition to the neighborhoody West End
flagship, there's a more cosmopolitan outlet, Two Fat Ladies in the City , at
118a Blythswood St. ( &   0141/847-0088 ); for a more formal setting go to Two Fat
Ladies at the Buttery (652 Argyle St.; &   0141/221-8188 ).

Inexpensive
Cafezique CAFE/BISTRO You're not likely to stumble across Cafezique,
but West End locals will know how to find this modern, split-level cafe in the Partick
neighborhood of the West End. Up the hill from Dumbarton Road and Mansfield
Park (which hosts the farmers' markets every fortnight), this eatery serves up every-
thing from spicy Bloody Marys, cappuccinos, and scones with jam to knock-out eggs
Benedict, alongside a decent range of main courses. There's not an inch of unused
space, but the staff manages to make all feel welcomed. A great wee place.
66 Hyndland St. &   0141/339-7180. Reservations recommended. Main courses £6-£12. MC, V. Daily
9am-10pm. Underground: Kelvinhall.
Konaki GREEK This simple and unassuming Greek taverna midway between the
city center and the heart of the West End—convenient for the several moderately
priced hotels and guesthouses nearby—has developed a reputation for good, hearty
food at relatively inexpensive prices. The menu includes phyllo pastry stuffed with
goat's cheese, slow-cooked meats, and chargrilled kebabs. For a sample of Greek
delicacies such as stuffed grape leaves and hummus dip, opt for the meze platter.
