City Merchant FISH/SCOTTISH This restaurant in the heart of Merchant City
combines friendly service and menus that highlight fresh fish, seafood, and Scottish
meat. Not exactly old-fashioned but certainly favored by businessmen and by those
celebrating a family event, it is also convenient if you're attending a performance at
the City Halls, which are just across the street. The seared scallops and the classic
smoked haddock soup, known as Cullen skink, are both tempting. But if you're not
in the mood for fruits of the sea, roast breast of duck, rack of lamb, or an escalope of
venison can substitute.
97-99 Candleriggs. &   0141/553-1577. www.citymerchant.co.uk. Reservations recommended. Fixed
price lunch £12; main courses £16-£22. AE, DC, MC, V. Mon-Sat noon-10:30pm; Sun 1-9pm. Under-
ground: Buchanan St.
Moderate
Café Cossachok RUSSIAN Back to its original address on King Street, but
completely redesigned now and integrated into the arts/educational center known as
Trongate 103, Café Cossachok is better than ever. It's a combination of restaurant
and Russian cultural center, where live music is frequently played at supper time
