Planet Out This bright bar draws a mixed crowd, attracting a slightly higher per-
centage of lesbians than most of its nearby competitors. It manages to combine a
good, relaxed daytime trade—sort of a neighborhood pub—with a heady, hedonistic,
late-night vibe after dark with popular local DJs such as Trendy Wendy offering
preclub warm-ups. Open Monday through Friday from 4pm to 1am and Saturday

CINEMA
Cameo Periodically threatened with closure for the sake of urban redevelop-
ment, the Cameo is a classic venue showing a mix of Hollywood and indie cinema

Cineworld Part of a chain of multiplex cinemas across the U.K., Cineworld com-
bines big releases and Hollywood blockbusters with art house and some foreign

Filmhouse The capital's most important cinema, the Filmhouse is the focus
of the Edinburgh Film Festival—one of the oldest annual film festivals in the world.
The movies here are foreign and art house, classic and experimental, documentary
and shorts. Plus, the Filmhouse hosts discussions and lectures with directors. The
cafe-bar stays open late and serves drinks and light meals. This is a must stop for any

Vue Edinburgh The big glass-fronted multiplex below Calton Hill at the round-
about near the top of Leith Walk is the most recent addition to the cinema scene,
quickly changing its original name of Warner Village to Vue. It offers first-run, big
