Late-Night Eats
Negociants (45 Lothian St.; &   0131/
225-6313 ). It serves food until midnight
during the week and until 2am on Fri-
day and Saturday nights (that is, Sat
and Sun mornings). My favorite late
night eatery is Kebab Mahal (see p. 82).
Okay, it's Friday or Saturday night.
You've been out to a play, the pub, or
dance club, and now you're utterly
starving, but it's somewhere between
11pm and 1am. You're not exactly sure—
food will help. The area around Edin-
burgh University is your best bet. Try
PUBS & BARS
New Town
The Abbotsford Abbotsford bartenders have been pouring pints since around
1900. The gaslight era is virtually still alive here, thanks to the preservation of dark
paneling and ornate plaster ceiling. The ales on tap change about once a week, and
there is a good selection of single malt whiskies, too. Drinks are served Monday
through Saturday from 11am to 11pm. Platters of food are dispensed from the bar
Monday through Saturday from noon to 3pm and in an upstairs dining space from
5:30 to 10pm, too. Located near the eastern end of Rose Street, just a short walk from
Waverley Station. 3-5 Rose St. &   0131/225-5276. www.theabbotsford.co.uk. Bus: 3, 28, or 45.
All Bar One In general, I resist the urge to promote characterless chain pubs, but
the All Bar One operation is a well-run business, and the smart bar in New Town (a
second outlet is off Lothian Rd.) offers a good selection of wines by the glass. Drinks
are served Monday to Thursday from 11:30am to midnight; Friday and Saturday from
11:30am to 1am; and Sunday from 12:30 to 11pm. Food is available daily from open-
ing until 9 or 10pm. 29 George St. &   0131/226-9971. www.allbarone.co.uk. Bus: 24, 28, or 45.
The Bailie Bar The Bailie is at the heart of the village of Stockbridge and feels
as if it could substitute as a public meeting hall for the neighborhood. Often there
is plenty of banter between the regulars and the staff, and the music never drowns
out the conversation. A bit of live folk is often played on Sunday evenings, and a
dining room is adjacent to the main lounge with its island bar. Drinks are served
Monday to Thursday from 11am to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 11am to
1am, and Sunday from 12:30 to 11pm. Food is available Monday to Thursday 11am
to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 5pm, and Sunday from 12:30 to 5pm.
2 St. Stephen St., Stockbridge. &   0131/225-4673. www.bailiebar.co.uk. Bus: 24, 29, or 42.
Cafe Royal Circle Bar Another well-preserved, Victorian-era pub, the Cafe
Royal was nearly demolished in the late 1960s. Thankfully, it was spared. Spacious
booths create a comfortable and historically stylish place to drink. Hours for the bar
are Monday through Wednesday from 11am to 11pm, Thursday from 11am to mid-
night, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 1am, and Sunday from 12:30 to 11pm.
Above-average food from the same kitchen as the neighboring oyster bar/restaurant
is served daily until about 1pm. 19 W. Register St. &   0131/556-1884. www.caferoyal.org.uk. Bus:
8 or 17.
