FASHION
Corniche One of the more sophisticated boutiques in Edinburgh; if it's the latest
in Scottish fashion, expect to find it here. Racks have included “Anglomania kilts”
created by Vivienne Westwood, as well as fashions by Gautier, Katherine Hamnett,
and Yamamoto. Men's clothes are in the neighboring shop. 2 Jeffrey St. (near the Royal
Mile). &   0131/556-3707. www.corniche.org.uk.
Cruise Commonly associated with Glasgow, this home-grown fashion outlet
began in Edinburgh's Old Town—not generally considered fertile ground for the
avant-garde. There is still a shop off the Royal Mile, but this New Town outlet is the
focus for haute couture. 94 George St. &   0131/226-3524. www.cruisefashion.co.uk.
MENSWEAR
Walker Slater Well-made and contemporary (if understated) men's clothes,
made of tweed or cotton, and dyed in rich, earthy hues, rule the roost here. It also
carries Mackintosh overcoats and accessories for the smart gentleman about town.
20 Victoria St. (near George IV Bridge). &   0131/220-2636. www.walkerslater.com.
STANDOUT BOUTIQUES
Arkangel William Street in the city's affluent West End offers a host of boutique
shops. This one specializes in labels apparently exclusive not only to the Scottish
capital but to all of Scotland. U.K. clothes designers include Clara Collins. 4 William
St., West End. &   0131/226-4466. www.arkangelfashion.co.uk.
Cookie As would be expected on Cockburn Street, this funky women's clothing
shop has t-shirts from the likes of Ruby Walk and Sugarhill. Bargains compared with
similar stock elsewhere. 29 Cockburn St. &   0131/622-7260.
Totty Rocks Established by two former students from the Edinburgh School of
Art who went on to work in design in London, Milan, and Hong Kong, this shop
features its own label line of contemporary clothing for women. The stock includes
other labels (and some serious prices, too) such as Bebaroque hosiery. 40 Victoria St.
&   0131/226-3232. www.tottyrocks.com.
VINTAGE
Rusty Zip Smaller sister outlet to Armstrong's in the Grassmarket (80 Grassmar-
ket &  0131/220-5557), this vintage clothing outlet still packs a lot in, whether retro
fashion or party accessories such as feather boas or image-rearranging wigs. 14 Teviot
Place &   0131/226-4634. www.armstrongsvintage.co.uk.
Department Stores
Harvey Nichols Opened in 2002, the advent of Harvey Nics in Edinburgh
was highly celebrated but a tad slow to catch on. Perhaps traditional shoppers were
not quite prepared for floors of expensive labels and designers such as Jimmy Choo
or Alexander McQueen. But they've since learned. 30-34 St. Andrew's Sq. &   0131/524-
8388. www.harveynichols.com.
Jenners Opened in 1838, this shop's neo-Gothic facade is almost as much of
a landmark as the Scott Monument just across Princes Street. The food hall offers
a wide array of gift-oriented Scottish products, including heather honey, Dundee
