In-Depth Information
Shopping Complexes
Ocean Terminal Although it was designed by the Conran group, which gave the
world Habitat, this is ultimately just another modern indoor mall. Debenhams,
French Connection, Gap, and others have set out their stalls at this retail cathedral,
which gets a lot of footfall from tourists because the royal yacht Britannia is moored
nearby. Open till 8pm Monday to Friday. Ocean Drive, Leith. &   0131-555-8888. www.ocean
terminal.com.
Princes Mall There's something for everyone—except a leading department
store—at this tri-level mall next to Waverley Station and beneath the city's main
tourist information center. There are about 80 shops selling fashions, accessories,
gifts, books, jewelry, and beauty products; and a food court with typical fast-food
outlets. Princes St. &   0131/557-3759. www.princesmall-edinburgh.co.uk.
St. James Centre Slightly more upmarket than the Princes Mall, this shopping
center is anchored by the John Lewis department store, along with Dorothy Perkins,
River Island, and Topshop. There are frequent discussions over whether the rather
monstrous-looking mall should be torn down and replaced with something more
architecturally attractive. Leith St. (at east end of Princes St.). &   0131/557-0050. www.stjames

SHOPPING A TO Z
Shopping hours in central Edinburgh are generally from 9 or 10am to 6pm Monday
through Wednesday and on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, shops open at 11am or
noon and close around 5pm. On Thursdays, many shops remain open until 7 or 8pm.
Antiques
Carson Clark Gallery If you're in the market for a bit of history and a
unique souvenir, check out this specialist in antique maps and sea charts. One of
my favorite works is an early 19th-century pictorial and graphic depiction of the
origins, topography, and length of Scotland's major rivers. In addition to fascinating
old maps, there are also smart reproductions of historic etchings and prints. 181 Can-
ongate. &   0131/556-4710. www.carsonclarkgallery.co.uk.
Books
Blackwell Once an outlet of the venerable, homegrown James Thin bookshop
(which alas went out of business), this store near the Royal Mile still has a knowl-
edgeable staff and wide-ranging stock of fiction and nonfiction, despite being part of
a large U.K. chain operation now. 53 South Bridge. &   0131/622-8222. www.blackwell.co.uk.
McNaughtan's Bookshop Trading since 1957, this is one of the city's best
antiquarian and second-hand book purveyors. A key stop for book lovers. 3a Haddington
Place (at the top of Leith Walk near Gayfield Sq.). &   0131/556-5897. www.mcnaughtansbookshop.com.
Waterstone's The giant Barnes & Noble-like operation with plenty of stock
and lots of soft seats is the most prominent book retailer in the city center. It has a
good Scottish section on the ground floor and branches in New Town at the western
end of Princes Street and on George Street. 128 Princes St. (near Waverley Station). &   0131/
226-2666. www.waterstones.com.
