In-Depth Information
Start the hike at the wide crushed-gravel path adjoining the south side of the parking lot, off South
MacGregor Way. Turn right and come to a T. Take the left branch, passing a sign that states OUTSIDE
TRAIL—1.4 MILES / INSIDE TRAIL—1/3 MILE.
The hike is mostly through open canopy, so wear a hat and sunscreen. The areas around the trail are
grass and mowed. Sidewalks often cross the trail, leading to the parking area, the playing fields, or the
street. Benches and picnic tables are placed conveniently near the trail.
Pass some interesting old cedar trees almost completely covered with Spanish moss that present a
good photo op. There are ball fields on the left. Continue following the trail with Calhoun Road on the
right, and then make a hard left, away from the road.
There are more cedar trees, but these are growing at a nearly 45-degree angle. This type of growth is
more common at the Continental Divide or on windy mountaintops. It is very uncommon in the Hous-
ton area, which is barely above sea level.
Pass a series of at least ten tennis courts, for which the park is famous. Follow the trail left (north) as
it parallels Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Many large loblolly pines are on the left side of the trail,
and several picnic shelters can be seen.
Stop at the bridge where Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard crosses Brays Bayou. Make a hard left
(west) as the trail transitions from concrete to asphalt. Walk along the bayou, which is down a slope
and 45 feet away. The bayou is about 25 feet wide but subject to change depending on the amount of
rainfall. It is separated from the trail by a chain-link fence. The trail generally parallels the bayou,
sometimes getting closer and sometimes moving away. A stoplight at Calhoun Road and South
MacGregor Way is just beyond the park entrance gate.
Turn left at this intersection and cross South MacGregor Way. Use caution—this street can have
heavy traffic. Continue on the trail and pass a tall palm tree in front of the swimming pool building.
End the hike at the entrance road to the parking area.
