Hardware Reference
In-Depth Information
Summary
Using engineering best practices and following a waterfall workflow can help even small
teams manage a lot of project complexity. If you take any lessons out of this chapter to
put in your pocket and carry with you as you build hardware, believe in the utility of gate-
keeping reviews and thorough documentation. More eyes on a design catch more issues.
Having a plan helps you execute effectively. And the more you document about a design
from theory to implementation and testing, the less you have to remember when it comes
time to catch and fix bugs. Moreover, as the designer, you can always follow the spirit of
formal engineering design, even if your company doesn't mandate formal design controls.
If you want users to be able to use your hardware successfully, take the next step and thor-
oughly document your hardware. Chapter 14 , Taxonomy of Hardware Documentation , by
Addie Wagenknecht provides a walk-through of the appropriate documentation to include
for open source hardware. For a series of checklists used throughout this chapter, refer to
Appendix C , Design Process Checklist .
Good luck!
