Glossary
This is a glossary ofthe boldterms within this topic.Many terms cover the spectrum ofopen
source hardware, including a wealth of manufacturing terminology. Many definitions of the
following terms are contextual to open source hardware.
A
assembly machinery Specialized equipment that assembles items, such as a reflow oven
or pick-and-place system.
attribution When using a design with a license containing an attribution clause, you must
publish or redistribute the original design or a derivative design, giving credit to the author
of the original design.
automated optical inspection (AOI) A machine that optically inspects solder joints and
verifies quality.

bill of materials (BOM) The list of materials or components that your product is made of.
C
centroid file A file containing information about the location of each component to be
placed on the circuit board. The centroid file is commonly a .CSV file that specifies the x, y
coordinates of each part in relation to one corner of the PCB.
clone An open source hardware product that has been directly copied and is in line with the
Open Source Hardware Definition because it does not infringe on the trademarks of other
companies. Also called a copy.
components placed per hour (CPH) The number of components a machine can place on a
PCB in 1 hour.
contract manufacturer (CM) The manufacturer with which you contract to build your
product.
copy An open source hardware product that has been directly copied and is in line with the
Open Source Hardware Definition because it does not infringe on the trademarks of other
companies. Also called a clone.
