In-Depth Information
Did you make your parts makeable to begin working with by working with a manu-
facturer at an early stage to get its feedback on the ease of fabrication of the
product you are designing?
Have you reached out to other designers, particularly those in the open source hard-
ware community? You might get lucky and come across someone who has already
been down the same path and can help you.
Did you send your parts with proper dimensions?
Did you include tolerances?
Did you include materials selections and material finishes?
Did your BOM include parts numbers, quantities, part function, revision informa-
tion, and assembly information?
Did you get samples made of your product before approving a whole manufactur-
ing run?
Did you create a requirements document for the manufacturer, labeling each re-
quirement with the words “MUST,” “SHOULD,” or “MAY”?
Did you specify and communicate every last detail?
For small production runs, have you tested each and every product before boxing
the units and shipping them to customers?
For larger production runs, have you tested samples from each batch of your
product to confirm that the factory quality control process is effective?
