student Nwanua Elumeze and I designed an e-sewing kit that we used
to introduce young people to electronics.
In early 2006, I added a microcontroller and a collection of sensors
and actuators to this kit. This was the first prototype LilyPad set ( Fig-
ure 9.1 ) . Components were soldered to circuit boards I made by laser-
cutting conductive fabric. These circuit boards could be stitched into
textile projects like a fabric patch. Conductive thread made electrical
connections between pieces. I began to hold workshops, using my e-
textile construction kit to teach people programming, design, and en-
gineering with the materials pictured in Figure 9.1 .
