In-Depth Information
The metro station is on the lower ground floor beneath the international departures hall
- follow the 'Metro/Subway' signs down the escalators and through the underground
walkway. A token costs a mere 2 and services depart every 10 minutes or so from
5.40am until 1.40am. When you get off the metro, the tram platform is right in front of
you. You'll need to buy another token ( 2) to pass through the turnstiles. The entire trip
from the airport takes around 50 to 60 minutes to Sultanahmet, 60 to 70 minutes to
Eminönü and 85 to 95 minutes to Taksim.
Airport Bus
If you are staying in Beyoğlu, the Havataş ( 212-444 0487; www.havas.com.tr ) airport bus
from Atatürk International Airport is even more convenient. This departs from outside the
arrivals hall. Buses leave every 30 minutes between 4am and 1am; the trip takes between
40 minutes and one hour, depending on traffic. Tickets cost 10 and the bus stops in front
of the Turkish Airlines (THY) office on Cumhuriyet Caddesi, just off Taksim Meydanı.
Note that signage on the buses and at stops sometimes reads 'Havaş' rather than
'Havataş'.
A public bus service (no 96T) travels from a stop next to the Havataş buses outside the
arrivals hall and travels to Taksim Meydanı, but to travel on this passengers must have an
İstanbulkart (travelcard) and these are not available at the airport.
Hotel Shuttle
Many hotels will provide a free pick-up service from Atatürk airport if you stay with them
for three nights or more. There are also a number of cheap (but very slow) shuttle-bus ser-
vices from hotels to the airport for your return trip. Check details with your hotel.
CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO 2 , the main cause of human-in-
duced climate change. Modern travel is dependent on aeroplanes, which might use less fuel per kilo-
metre per person than most cars but travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit
gases (including CO 2 ) and particles also contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites
offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate the carbon emissions generated by their jour-
ney and, for those who wish to do so, to off set the impact of the greenhouse gases emitted with con-
