Located on the attractive square
surrounding Galata Tower, this wooden building dates from 1842 but has been completely
rebuilt inside. Rooms are elegantly decorated and well equipped; some have water views
(ask for 405) There's a rooftop bar/restaurant with great views and the atmospheric Sensus

Rarely has a reopening engendered as much an-
ticipation as this one. The hotel's €23 million restoration was completed in 2010 and loc-
als have flocked here to see the result. Rooms have been given a luxurious facelift, and al-
though most are cramped, the sumptuous breakfast buffet and extensive facilities (restaur-
ants, spa, gym) compensate. Don't bother paying extra for a Golden Horn view.

Hostels in İstanbul are usually impersonal hulks
with jungle-like atmospheres, but World House is reasonably small and very friendly. Best
of all is its location close to Beyoğlu's entertainment strips but not too far from the sights
in Sultanahmet. There are large and small dorms (one shower for every six beds), but
none are female-only. Internet costs TL3 per hour.

The Asmalımescit neighbourhood has become ex-
tremely fashionable in recent times, something that the Ansen's owners anticipated when
they restored this historic five-storey building in 2003. Suites are large and exceptionally
well set up, with work desk, satellite TV and lovely bathroom; some also have an
equipped kitchenette and Golden Horn view. There's a popular Italian restaurant on the
ground floor.
