This friendly place has lovely dorms that are worlds away
from the impersonal barracks-like spaces so often seen in hostels. Bright and airy, they
feature wooden floorboards, rugs, lockers and comfortable beds; most have air-con. Bath-
rooms are clean and plentiful. It's a great choice in winter because the cosy rooftop bar
has an open fire.

There's no design-driven minimalism
at this Bauhaus. A small and slightly chaotic operation, it stands in stark and welcome
contrast to the huge institutional-style hostels found on nearby Akbıyık Caddesi. Dorms
(some female-only with bathroom) have curtained bunks with good mattresses; those up-
stairs are nicest. Top marks go to the plentiful bathrooms, entertainment program and
rooftop terrace bar.

Apartments are relatively hard to find in Sultanahmet, so this recently
opened place is most welcome. Three good-sized rooms (one on each floor) have a bed,
sofa bed and kitchenette, making them a good choice for families of three or - at a pinch -
four. The top-floor apartment has a sea view and there's a small communal roof terrace.

We've included this resolutely old-fashioned place (imagine ivory wallpaper
and floral carpets) for three reasons: it's wonderfully located opposite Aya Sofya; the Ci-
prices are remarkably reasonable. You could do a lot worse.
