a lighthouse, quarantine station and restaurant. In 1999 James Bond visited in The World
Is Not Enough .
The tower is open to the public during the day as a cafe-restaurant. Small boats run
from Salacak to the island every 15 minutes from noon to late at night Tuesday to Sunday.
Unfortunately, the views from the island aren't great and the tower itself isn't very inter-
esting inside.
KADIKÖY
If you feel like eating, drinking or shopping after your explorations in Üsküdar, we recommend that
you take a bus or taxi to neighbouring Kadıköy.
Kadıköy's main attraction is a large and wonderfully diverse produce market near the iskele .
Amid this are two excellent restaurants and two equally excellent cafes.
Known throughout the culinary world, Musa Dağdeviren's Çiya Sofrası ( www.ciya.com.tr ;
Güneşlibahçe Sokak 43; portions 10-15; 11am-11pm; Kadıköy) showcases dishes from the
region surrounding the chef/owner's home city of Gaziantep. While standards in the kitchen seemed
to have fallen in recent times, it's still a great place to try Turkish regional specialities. Its next-door
kebapçı (kebaps 15-35) sells a huge variety of tasty meat dishes. Neither sells alcohol.
Locals love Kadı Nımet Balıkçılık ( 216-348 7389; Serasker Caddesi 10a, Kadıköy; mezes
6-15, fish mains 10-30; noon-midnight; Kadıköy) , a casual place tucked among the fish
stalls. It serves some of the freshest seafood in the city and is always busy, so book for dinner. Try
the levrek dolma (stuffed sea bass meze).
Just down from Kadı Nımet Balıkçılık is Fazıl Bey ( www.fazilbey.com ; Serasker Caddesi 3,
Kadıköy; daily; Kadıköy) , a tiny cafe/coffee roastery that has been serving İstanbul's best
Turkish coffee since 1923.
Closer to the iskele , Baylan Pastanesi ( 216-336 2881; www.baylanpastanesi.com.tr ;
Muvakkithane Caddesi 9; 7am-10pm; Kadıköy) is known for its excellent espresso coffee,
decadent ice-cream sundaes and delicious cakes and pastries (try the ay çöreğı , a pastry with a wal-
nut, sultana and spice filling).
Turkish Flavours ( CLICK HERE ) conducts daily tours of the Spice Market in Eminönü and the pro-
duce market here. These include a banquet lunch at Çiya Sofrası.
