packed with locals scratching their heads over which of the 35-odd varieties of pudding to
sample. Try the
firin sutlaç
,
aşure
(dried fruit, nut and pulse pudding) or
kazandibi
(slightly burnt chicken-breast pudding). There are branches throughout town, including

Those keen to hear some
fasıl
while in town should come
to this popular
meyhane
on a Friday or Saturday night. Standard dishes (including plenty
of mezes) are accompanied by musicians playing violin, zither and drum. Locals know all
of the words, sing along and dance between courses - everyone else hums and looks
happy .

Another popular
meyhane
, Feraye hosts
fasıl
musicians and
the occasional solo singer. Everything is authentically
Türk tarzı
(Turkish style).
MEYHANES
On weekends, locals like to get together with friends and family. And many of these get-togethers
occur in
meyhanes
(traditional Turkish taverns).
Meyhanes
serve a particular style and range of food. A standard menu will include a lavish array
of hot and cold mezes, a limited number of meat kebaps and a selection of whatever fish was fresh
and plentiful at the market that morning - all washed down with copious pourings of the local tipple,
rakı (aniseed brandy).
