Enterprise Platform Plug-ins
A platform must be an open system into which third-party products can be
plugged. IBM's Big Data platform is exactly that. At the time of writing, IBM
has well over 100 Big Data partners! Rather than attempt to detail specifics,
in the remainder of this section, we describe some of the partnership catego-
ries of integration.
Development Tooling
IBM has several partners who have development tools for specific processes
and components. There are a few partners with specialized development
tools for BigInsights. IBM has partners, such as Datameer, which provides
Big Data visualization capabilities, and Karmasphere, which provides data
analysts with a development and visualization tool for data analysis on top
of Hadoop.
Analytics
As described earlier in this chapter, there are several analytic applications
and engines within IBM that are integrated with the Big Data platform. There
are also analytic engines that can be integrated with the Big Data platform as
components. Several open source analytic components have been integrated
with the Big Data platform for client engagements: video analytics, audio
analytics, and statistical analytics, among many others.
Visualization
Several IBM partners specialize in visualization of Big Data. Some focus on
visualization of Hadoop-system data, others on visualization of structured
data in warehouse appliances, and some others on visualization of data in
motion. We've covered some examples in the previous section on analytic
applications, such as Cognos Consumer Insights (CCI), which visualizes social
media data for consumer sentiment and trend analysis. In fact, a famous food
and beverage company ended up detecting negative sentiment about their
recent environmentally friendly packaging change, which was met with a
backlash of sentiment, manifesting itself in thousands of YouTube videos and
