The IBM Big Data
Analytic Accelerators
The IBM Big Data platform contains multiple general-purpose tools to
analyze Big Data. Although these tools are rich in their capabilities, to mon-
etize your Big Data assets, you inevitably need to write application logic
that is suited to your business needs. This is no different than data you store
in a relational database, where applications are needed to make databases
applicable to specific use cases (for example, CRM software). Of course, we
will note that the relational database industry is highly mature. Thousands
of database applications can be bought, and development skills are ubiqui-
tous. Today, out-of-the-box Big Data applications aren't easily found, leav-
ing organizations to adopt a roll your own (RYO) approach. Now consider
that Big Data development skills are priced at a premium due to scarcity,
and we bet you're starting to see the challenge … and the need.
To reduce the time it takes to extract business value from Big Data, IBM
has developed a set of Big Data analytic accelerators—software modules
that provide specific analytics functionality to the IBM Big Data platform.
IBM's Big Data analytic accelerators are a culmination of expert patterns
learned from countless customer engagements. You can use most of these
accelerators across industries to extract true value from your Big Data. A
number of these accelerators are available today, and more are in develop-
ment for future releases. In this chapter, we describe three of the currently
available accelerators: the Machine Data Accelerator, the Social Data Accel-
erator, and the Telco Data Accelerator.
