BigInsights also features integration with R in the form of an app available
in the Applications panel of the BigInsights Web Console. With this app,
users can run ad-hoc R scripts against their data.
Analytic Accelerators:
Finding Needles in Haystacks of Needles?
In recognizing the importance of tools that reflect specific use cases, IBM has
built a set of Big Data Analytic Accelerators—tools designed to enable ana-
lysts and data scientists to productively explore data. The initial set of accelera-
tors are: the Social Data Accelerator, Telecommunications Data Accelerator, and
the Machine Data Accelerator. These accelerators are configured to provide out-
of-the-box value and can be further customized. For example, you can tailor the
text analytics extractors for the Machine Data Accelerator to your company's
log data. See Chapter 9 for a detailed description of these analytic accelerators.
Apps for the Masses: Easy Deployment
and Execution of Custom Applications
The BigInsights Web Console has a tab called “Applications,” where you can
see a number of apps that are ready for you to run. IBM has modeled this
panel after the “app store” concept that is common today for mobile devices.
Running these apps takes a simple common approach: click on the app, enter
the path from which the data to be analyzed will be read, enter another path
where you want the result sets to be stored (and any of the app's additional
fields) and you're ready to run the application. You don't have to spend pre-
cious budgets on app deployment with installers and such—just click and run.
BigInsights ships with a number of apps, which you can use to test the clus-
ter, and to get an idea of the kinds of apps you can build. In fact, the code to
write every app that's shipped with BigInsights can be downloaded from the
console as an Eclipse BigInsights project, so you have a ready-made starting
point for your own app project! Another nice thing about this feature is that you
can use it as a front-end scheduler for end users to run Big Data apps distributed
in your enterprise.
Your business analysts and data scientists can leverage existing apps as
building blocks to create new apps. Users can do this by using a graphical
drag-and-drop tool to chain existing apps together in a workflow. You can eas-
ily direct the outputs from one app into the inputs of the next app in the chain.
