supports virtualization, which is a must in Cloud environments. BigInsights
also has an excellent security story, whereby the entire cluster can be isolated
behind a single point of access through the Web Console. From a licensing
perspective, it couldn't be easier, because the pricing model for BigInsights is
based on the volume of data that is stored in the cluster (before replication
and after compression). Finally, the BigInsights licenses have no restrictions
around virtualization. Again, you only pay for how much you use, which is
the same pricing model as Cloud services!
BigInsights has been successfully deployed on some of the most notable
Cloud providers; for example, Amazon EC2, RackSpace, and IBM Smart-
Cloud. IBM has also partnered with RightScale, the leading Cloud manage-
IBM has also partnered with RightScale, the leading Cloud manage-

and several other IBM products on both public Clouds and private Clouds
that are built on open source Cloud stacks from Eucalyptus and Cloud.com.
Higher-Class Hardware:
IBM PowerLinux Solution for Big Data
Although commodity hardware deployments have been the norm for Hadoop
clusters up to this point, we're seeing some alternatives. One compelling option
is the IBM PowerLinux Solution for Big Data. This is a Linux on Power
hardware solution that's been optimized for Hadoop.
One of the most significant benefits of Power hardware is reliability,
which makes it well suited to be deployed as master nodes in your cluster. If
you need higher energy efficiency, or need to concentrate DataNodes to fewer
tiles, or simply need more processing power, Power can most definitely be a
great way to go.
In 2011, the IBM Watson system beat the two greatest champions of the
American quiz show Jeopardy! Linux on Power was the underlying platform for
Watson, which also leveraged Hadoop for some of its subsystems. During the
development of the IBM PowerLinux Solution for Big Data, customizations and
lessons learned from the Watson project were applied to this offering.
Cloudera Support
With the release of BigInsights 1.4, IBM expanded its Big Data platform to
run on other distributions of Hadoop, beginning with Cloudera. The Cloudera
