S-blades
S-blades are intelligent processing nodes that make up the MPP engine of the
Netezza appliance. Each S-blade is an independent server that contains pow-
erful multicore CPUs, multiengine FPGAs, and gigabytes of RAM, all bal-
anced and working concurrently to deliver peak performance.
Netezza protects against S-blade failures as well. The system management
software continuously monitors each S-blade and, if a failure is detected, the
S-blade is taken out of service and its processing load is automatically trans-
ferred to the spare S-blade. Monitoring of the S-blade includes error correc-
tion code (ECC) checking on the blade memory. If the system management
software detects that ECC errors have exceeded a failure threshold, it takes
the S-blade out of service.
Disk Enclosures
The system's disk enclosures (which each contain slices of a table's data)
contain high-density, high-performance disks that are RAID protected. Disk
