Commonly used fastener standards include ANSI C135.1 (ANSI 1999),
ASTM A307 (ASTM 2010a), ASTM A193M (ASTM 2011), and ASTM A325
(ASTM 2010b). The standard selected and the bolt tightening procedure
should be determined by the engineer responsible for the connection
design.
Inserts: The load applied to a threaded insert should not exceed the
rated capacity of the insert or that which is determined through testing.
Inserts should be made of materials that will not deteriorate in the envi-
ronment in which they are placed (see Fig. 5-9). Materials should be
selected to ensure that the concrete, the insert, and the bolt are not chemi-
cally reactive with each other. Care should be taken to ensure that place-
ment of the inserts does not reduce the load carrying capacity of the pole
