The Hike
A series of interconnecting loops make it easy to shorten or lengthen this hike along the shore of Lake
Grapevine. Despite being a few miles west of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the park feels
very remote. For simplicity, this trail hugs the shoreline of Lake Grapevine and the lake's sandy beach
can provide a good workout and somewhat muddy shoes, depending on recent rainfall.
Because several trails spring off the main trail, it can be challenging to follow the main trail, but
simply simply keep your eye to the shoreline to avoid getting too far offtrack.
The trailhead is the low gate entrance to the right side of the parking lot. Here the dirt trail winds
through a tallgrass meadow. At about 0.5 mile the trail comes to another parking lot on the right.
The trail splits, passing several tall bird boxes on its way toward the beach. Simply follow the
shoreline, watching the occasional fisherman trolling in the more remote part of the lake in search of
bass, catfish, and crappies. On the lakeshore you'll see freshwater oyster shells and driftwood and may
spot tracks from opossums, raccoons, and the pack of coyotes known to roam here.
Equestrians are another common sight, as this is a popular trail ride for nearby Marshall Creek
Ranch. Follow the shoreline to the point that juts out to reveal the next cove, about 2.5 miles from
where you started. Turn around here and retrace the shoreline back to the trailhead.
