Cedar Hill State Park: Talala
Trail
Located only 10 miles southwest of downtown Dallas, this trail feels worlds away as it winds through
the westernmost vestiges of blackland prairie on the way to Joe Pool Lake. The nearby Penn Farm Agri-
cultural History Center provides a hands-on history lesson.
Distance: 1.8-mile lollipop
Approximate hiking time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Moderate; can be difficult to follow
Trail surface: Packed dirt and grass
Best season: Feb through May

Schedule: Park open daily 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (gates locked)

Special considerations: Much of the trail is through open fields, so wear a hat and sun-
screen.

Finding the trailhead: From US 67 take exit 1382 and go 2.5 miles north. The park is
on the left. From I-20 take exit FM1382 and drive 4 miles south. The park is on the
right. From the park entrance turn left onto South Spine Road and look for the Talala
