In-Depth Information
The spatial distribution of the CHL-a concentration varies with time according to the variation of the
hydrodynamics effects due to the wind. The CHL-a map for 28 th of June is shown in Figure (7-36) .
The figure illustrates high concentrations in the middle area of the lake. This date was selected for the
calibration procedures using remote sensing data.

The calibration of eutrophication models is considered a complicated process due to the involvement
of several parameters and processes. In the eutrophication screening model, CHL-a is considered the
main indicator parameter for eutrophication. Due to the lack of CHL-a monitoring data and the
ecological model parameters, traditional calibration procedures are not applicable in this case;
therefore calibrating the CHL-a model will be mainly based on remote sensing data as highlightes
earleir. The calibration of the model is described in chapter 8. The developed BLOOM phytoplankton
module was applied to establish the relations between phytoplankton biomass (e.g. CHL-a) and
physico- chemical quality elements and pressures (e.g. nutrients and light conditions).
