drain. Similarly, the decreased concentrations in the southern area can be attributed to the lower
concentrations of this nutrient salt in Barseek drain water.
The average concentrations of phosphate in the drains were mostly higher than the concentrations in
the lake. This means that the drains are the main suppliers of phosphorus compounds to the lake.
Runoff from the cultivated land near to the lake provides a major contribution of nutrient salts to the
lake. The smallest concentrations of phosphates in the lake were recorded in summer. This decrease of
phosphate concentration in the lake can be attributed to the maximum growth of phytoplankton and
rooted plants in the lake during summer and consequently the uptake of large amounts of such nutrient
salt.
Therefore it is concluded from earlier studies that the drainage water is generally rich in dissolved
nutrient salts with special reference to the periods when fertilizer consisting of nitrogen and
phosphorus salts is applied over the cultivated areas around the lake. The highest concentrations of
ammonia were found in the lake during winter. Decreased concentrations were detected during spring
corresponding to increased aquatic vegetation. Higher concentrations of nutrient salt exist in the
eastern part of the lake where Edko drain discharges to the lake. In the next section, the analysis of the
average nutrient concentrations flowing into the lake from the drains is shown for the year 2005-2006,
and the estimated loads of nutrients into the lake are calculated based on these values. The
concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorous compounds are given in
Table (6-5)
.
