Some historical maps of the lake area were found in literature, Figure (5-7) includes three of these
maps at different years. The maps reflect the different conditions of the lake ecological system within
the past century.
Figure (5-7): The three maps of Egyptian Edko Lake on the Nile Delta indicate lake status on three periods,
1866, early 1970s (after Samman, 1974) and in 1995.
The maps illustrate the scales and diminishing area of the lake water body within time. They also
shows the transition of the reclaimed areas into commercial fish ponds that surrounds the vegetation
and the water body. In the coming section of this chapter describing the data analysis and assessment
more information on the lake status is shown through satellite images and change detection
comparison between different satellite images.
