5.5.2. Watershed Characteristics and Main Components
The study watershed is an irrigated watershed, which comprises a drainage catchment connected to a
shallow coastal lake as mentioned above. To define the watershed and its detailed characteristics for
water quality management a number of items and properties should be taken into consideration. These
properties will be the main factors affecting the analysis and modelling processes of the water quality
parameters in different water bodies within the watershed. The following items represents the main
characteristics of the study watershed;
Edko watershed is divided physically into two main components: the drainage catchment and the
shallow lake system. The drainage catchment is composed of Edko main drain and Barseek drain
collecting drainage water from the whole catchment into Lake Edko. The lake shallow system is
divided into three main components; the aquaculture belt around the lake vegetation, the vegetation
belt, and the free surface water body of the lake connected to the see outlet channel. Figure (5-5)
shows the watershed components.
