when there was a sale. If it was nice out, I walked. None of it was “convenient,” but when I went abroad
with more money than I needed, it was all worth it.
Doing a few little things each day can keep you motivated and help you toward your goal. As David Lee
of www.gobackpacking .com recounts, “I set an overall goal to pay off my credit cards and save $30,000.
This was the figure I felt was necessary to justify quitting my job and uprooting my life. From there, I
worked backward to set smaller, monthly goals. I taped these goals to my bathroom mirror, where I was
reminded of them every day. I established a habit of saving money from every paycheck. At first it was just
$25, but over the years that grew to $500. And as a short-term investment, I participated in my company's
stock purchase plan.”
At the end of the day, the more you save, the longer you can be on the road, the more comfortable you
can be, and the more activities you can do. You sacrifice now because of the rewards later. Because when
you are on safari in Africa or sailing the Galápagos Islands, you won't even be thinking about those missed
nights out or fancy dinners.
