In-Depth Information
ets for the Confucius Temple, Confucius's home, and the Confucius Mausoleum between $8 USD and $17
USD. Seeing the famous terracotta army will only set you back about $15 USD. No matter how you slice
it, attractions in China are reasonably priced. The listed prices above give you a good range to plan your
budget with.
While most attractions and temples are less than $10 USD, prices for hikes and outdoor activities tend
to be around $30 USD. For example, a trip to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain costs around $26 USD, a
visit to the Jiuzhai Valley is a whopping $59 USD, and a three-day pass to the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian
Province is $40 USD. You'll pay $37 USD to visit the Yellow Mountains in Anhui Province.
In Hong Kong, activities and attractions are much costlier than in mainland China. Most museums begin
around $10 USD, and observation decks and activities are between $20 USD and $30 USD. If you are visit-
ing Hong Kong, budget more money.
While Hong Kong has a city tourist pass, mainland China does not, and you won't find discount cards
and offers like you can in other parts of the world. If you are a student, however, you can get great discounts
to most of the national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites, which can otherwise cost upward of $32
USD to visit.
The Hong Kong city pass is offered by iVentures and also covers Macau. The three-day pass is $87 USD,
and the five-day pass is $115 USD. They come with many benefits and can be a good deal if you plan to
visit a lot of the big attractions and amusement parks in Hong Kong and Macau.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED?
Thanks to rapid economic growth, China isn't the bargain basement destination it used to be but a visit here
will hardly ever break the bank.
Staying in dormitories, traveling by bus or bicycle rather than by taxi, eating from street stalls or small
restaurants, and resisting the urge to splurge means it is possible to live on less than $22 USD per day. Real-
istically, including food and drink, accommodations, and transportation, the cost would be closer to $27
USD per day. If you are traveling only to the major cities, I would increase that to $35 USD a day. If you
want more comfort, including more Western food and nicer sleeper berths, I'd go closer to $40 USD a day.
