make a substantial contribution to the design of nanoscale structured
materials, and in relation to this chapter, there exist endless
applications for the commercialization of strong, water-impervious,
biocompatible adhesives derived from amyloid. It is clear from this
and other chapters in this topic that much is yet to be discovered
about the formation, functionality and biocompatibility of amyloid
in nature. Central to these efforts is the development of protocols
to identify, purify and characterize these proteins more simply, and
our current focus is on how this may be accomplished from complex
biological adhesives and cements.
