WHY FLY?
For many, getting a bird's-eye view of the verdant majesty of the Garden Island is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The chance to take a breath from above and wit-
ness aggressive earth at its finest is worth the risk of a chopper flight and the
dough the journey requires. And let's be clear... this is a magnificent ride and one
even many locals rave about. Still, some consider it an audible thorn in their side.
The Sierra Club and other island advocacy groups have long pushed for limits on
the freedom of commercial aircrafts to fly over residential neighborhoods and
Federal Aviation Administration-designated noise-abatement areas. For now it's a
voluntary system, however, so local activists recommend that passengers ask pi-
lots to avoid sensitive areas, such as the Kalalau Trail and popular beaches.
Activities
The only way to navigate the Huleʻia River and see the Huleʻia National Wildlife Refuge
