everything from salad and sub sandwiches to burgers and pasta. Divert yourself with a
festival of coin-operated games with dubious 'prizes.' Lazy cooks can get their pizza
half-baked (it's neither thick, thin, nor even just right) and finish cooking it in their rental
unit.
Hula Shores ISLAND CONTEMPORARY $$$
MAP
(Kamehameha V Hwy, Hotel Molokaʻi; bar 4-9pm) You can't beat the oceanfront location of
the Hotel Moloka'i's restaurant. After a major fire, the restaurant was due to reopen later
in 2013. Although it was the least-casual dining option on the island, its previous incarn-
ation was never noted for its food which was pretty average.
The simple waterfront bar area was untouched by the fire and is a nice place for a sun-
set drink.
WHAT FRIENDLY MEANS LOCALLY
In a cynical world, people don't realize that Molokaʻi's moniker, 'the friendly isle,' is
exactly right. There are the waves you get as you explore the uncrowded corners,
and the advice about which fresh fish is best when you're buying food for your holi-
day rental. More importantly, you'll start to slow your pace and understand that
'friendly' locally means slowing waaay down and taking your sense of rhythm from
others. Don't expect smiles that come your way first, but do expect your smiles to
be returned.
Entertainment
Bring board games, books and a gift for gab as nighttime fun is mostly DIY on Molokaʻi.
Paddler's Inn ( Click here ) serves booze until 2am. Friday nights, there is often a live
band; otherwise satellite sports prevails.
Hula Shores HAWAIIAN MUSIC
MAP
(Kamehameha V Hwy, Hotel Molokaʻi; 4-6pm Fri) The Hotel Molokaʻi's simple waterfront
bar features local kapuna (elders) who gather at a long table to play Hawaiian music on
'Aloha Fridays' from 4pm to 6pm. The music always draws a crowd; the performers
range from those with some languid and traditional hula moves to jam sessions with a
ukulele.
