This grueling outrigger canoe race from remote Hale O Lono Point
has close to 200 six-person teams paddling furiously across the 41-mile Kaʻiwi Channel
to Oʻahu. Best time (2011): four hours, 30 minutes, 54 seconds by the legendary Shell
Vaʻa team. Considered the world championship of men's long-distance outrigger canoe
racing. Held in October.
Sleeping
Molokaʻi's hotel choices are limited to one, in Kaunakakai. Almost everybody stays in a
B&B, cottage, condo or house. Quality ranges from rustic to swank, with the best places
having private grounds located right on the ocean. Listings are found throughout this
chapter, although the nicest properties are usually in the verdant and coastal east. (With
the closure of Molokaʻi Ranch, condos in the west can seem desolate.) There are no hos-
tels on the island; camping is limited to state and county parks.
Maui County (which comprises the islands of Maui, Molokaʻi, Lanaʻi and
Kahoʻolawe) has relaxed the rules somewhat that once made renting private homes com-
plicated or even illegal. Condos have always been in the clear and now private houses in
an approved zoning district (hotel, business, historic etc) may be rented. Those that are
not in approved districts can operate legally if they have received a conditional permit.
The situation on Molokaʻi is relaxed and there should be no problems.
