Ka Molokaʻi Makahiki TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL
( 553-3673) Molokaʻi is the only island still holding the ancient makahiki festival. It is
celebrated in late January with a traditional ceremony, an Olympics-esque competition of
ancient Hawaiian sports, crafts and activities held in Kaunakakai.
Molokaʻi Ka Hula Piko HULA
( 553-3673; www.kahulapiko.com ) As Molokaʻi is known as the birthplace of hula, its hula
festival in early May has some profound roots. It opens with a solemn ceremony at 3am
at Puʻu Nana (the site of Hawaii's first hula school), followed by a day-long festival in-
cluding performance, food and crafts.
St Damien's Feast Day RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL
( 553-5112) There are various events held in honor of Molokaʻi's first saint on his feast
day May 10. Plans call for a walk between the churches in the east that he built: St
