In-Depth Information
( 565-2222; www.golfonlanai.com ; guests/nonguests $210/225; 7am-6:30pm) This Jack
Nicklaus-branded course at the Four Seasons resort offers spectacular play along seaside
cliffs. The 12th hole challenges golfers to hit across a fairway that is really the ocean's
surf.
Sleeping
Note that owners of the condos around Manele Bay are prevented from renting out their
units to visitors.
Hulopoʻe Beach Camping CAMPGROUND $
(permit $30 plus $15 per person per night) Camping is allowed on the grassy expanse above
Hulopoʻe Beach. The pricey permits are issued by staff in the park.
Four Seasons Resort Lanaʻi at Manele Bay RESORT $$$
$$$
( 800-321-4666, 565-2000; www.fourseasons.com/manelebay ; 1 Manele Bay Rd; r from $400;
) Of the two island resorts on offer, this is the one that screams - well, stage-
whispers - Hawaii vacation! The decor of the 236 rooms is newly minimalist, in line
with Larry Ellison's aesthetics. He's also had the Asian-themed art collection replaced
with Hawaiian works.
The views of the azure waters (often featuring cavorting porpoises), the surrounds of
the vast pool and the soaring public rooms are impressive. Given a choice, we'll take this
resort first as it most says 'Hawaii.'
Eating & Drinking
The resort has many tables well-placed for watching the orange glint of the waters at
sunset. The bar area now features huge TVs for sporting events.
Other than the Four Seasons, the closest sources for food, drinks and picnics on Hulo-
poʻe Beach are in Lanaʻi City.
Nobu JAPANESE $$$
$$$
( 565-2000; Four Seasons Resort Lanaʻi at Manele Bay; meals from $50; 6-9:30pm) One of
the most visible changes wrought by Larry Ellison has been this branch of the worldwide
chain of very high-end Japanese sushi restaurants. Created by Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa,
Nobu is known for ultra-fresh and creative sushi and other Japanese dishes, in this case
with Hawaiian elements.
